A country strategically located between Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean came under the control of Spain, thus the confluence of the Spanish/ European culture took place and a large population of Spanish,Italians and Greeks settled there in the 15th century. Panama came in close contact with the Americans from the United States who sponsored an attack on Colombia to help it gain its independence. They initiated the project to build the canal and for years as the work progressed their influence in the Panamanian culture became more and more significant. The point that I am driving at, is Panama as you see it today, has more American influence even though most of its affluent settlers are from Europe. The ethnic Indians still exist away from the city, also there is a notable African, Chinese, Indian (Hindu) and Black population.
Rabiblanca means 'White Butt' and this is how the affluent fair-skinned Panamanians are referred as. These people live in big, luxurious homes and sometimes domestic helpers can out number the people in the house. It is common for kids all over the world to have strollers but among Rabiblanca it is not rare to have one nanny for each child. Essentially these people are a closed group who do not like to mingle with people not known to them. Domestic help is easily available in Panama in the form of locals from interiors, Colombians and Nicaraguans. The Blancos and Blancas have an indulgent lifestyle, they love to party within their social circles and vacation abroad with nannies on board.
The tanned skinned locals have a laid back life, the twenty- something girls gorge on high animal fat and grow big, while their size increases the clothes still remain small, they look like baby elephants in their halters and shorts. The men are not true-blue to their women and there is a very common saying there, you can never trust an Italian and a Latin American! Friday night and Saturday night partying among men and women is like religion.
The country which is synonym with 'carnivore- diet' owes its vegetables specially the Asian ones to Chinese. There is a size-able population of yellow-skinned Orientals living there who own small farms and stores. Some of them are the third generation living there.
If Chinese have been able to strengthen their roots in Panama how could Indians lag behind! Yes there is a substantial number of Indians( mostly Hindus) living in Panama City and Colon ( free trade zone) They speak fluent Spanish, most of them are prospering business people and a third generation who openly confesses their love for Bollywood Movies and Indian clothes. I have very high accolades for them because they assimilate the country's culture, some of them also marry Panamanians and yet do not forget their roots keeping it alive by celebrating Indian festivals, running Indian language and culture classes for children.
Carnaval Del Las Tablas is the biggest festival in Panama celebrated for four days in March, the highlights of the festival are song and dance performances and acclamation of two Queens. In the Panama City festivities are low- keyed but in the interiors they can be wild with men and women greeting each other with water. Panama celebrates two Independence days in November, first from Spain and second from Colombia; the school children get involved in these events which are modestly celebrated. In the forth position there is a tie between Christmas Day and Mother's day, yes! a lot of importance is given to the latter; a holiday is granted by the state. No sane man with a right frame of mind would forget to bring a present for his wife on Mother's day. When the kids are small the onus of making the woman important falls on the husband.
If you are in Panama you enjoy the beaches, there are no amusement centers, art galleries, aquariums or zoos to entertain you. One exception is Museo Del Hombre, the museum has a comprehensive display. The museum attached to the Panama Canal is smartly able to justify the marvel behind the engineering of the canal. There are also some indigenous art forms in Panama which touches your heart with the high color scheme and lots of figures.
Music, dance, food, alcohol and soccer unites the diverse population and make them one as Panamanian!
