2-hour Jeep Safari
A drive along the smooth ribbon roads from Petra to Wadi Rum rendered some spectacular views, be prepared to stop your car and snap the views. It took us approximately three hours to reach Rum, we parked the car and loaded a jeep for a 2 hour safari. The jeep driver was a person of few words (very shy Bedouin), thus the task of showing us around was delegated to the driver who accompanied us and was fluent in English. The safari had some designated stops in the dessert like the sand dune made of the finest red sand, a gorge and a tea stall (free tea served in Bedouin camp though they expect tips) They also provide boards for sand boarding, some young boys from Israel tried a leg at it, without much success handed it back. Wadi Rum’s landscape is God’s gift and wind is the carrier who brings it to us. Yes, the eroded mountains and the blankets of the finest sand are a work of nature at its very best. After the Safari we spent some time at the plush Visitor Centre and then checked into our camp.
The Sun City Camp
Extremely hospitable! comes to my mind at the thought of Sun City Camp. It was a modest camp with attached bathroom; at a spot which provided great views of Rum. The staff was graceful enough to cater to all our demands (in getting a preferred camp, providing us with outdoor furniture, cooling our beverages in their freezer etc) A small walk from the camp is the sunset point but that day was cursed by an over cast and we missed the sunset and a canopy of stars. I guess the delicious food served to us by the friendly staff pretty much made- up for that loss. What made the night memorable was the traditional Bedouin music and dance started by the staff and one by one all of us joining in. I must mention that the food was to die for.
